Dear Credit Union,
I got over the fact that my “pre-approved” loan application had to be done on paper. Really, even though I am too used to doing all things digitally, I printed out the form and filled it out, in ink no less. I wanted to have this done in advance, before I start shopping for cars, so I don’t have to be arranging financing for my “new” used car at the last minute.
I walked the application over to your office and waited in line, only to have someone there tell me that I needed one more form (which wasn’t listed on your website) to attach to the application. And then she refused to take the application because it was incomplete. “Fax all of it in,” she told me, giving me a card with a fax number and a phone number. Then she sent me away, responding to all my questions with “they’ll address that when you get approved.”
Within the hour I had gotten the missing form, and tried to fax the entire stack of papers over. The fax gave me an error message, “Cannot connect.” A second time. A third time. And so I called, spoke to the same person I had seen earlier, and was told that there wasn’t anything wrong with their fax. “Try again,” she said. And I did. And it did not connect, again. (I tried the fax on other numbers, and it went through just fine.)
Upon calling her a second time and telling her that the fax wasn’t going through, despite her protests that their fax was fine, she directed me to send the fax to another branch. And so I did, and the fax went through fine.
The processing was supposed to take “up to two days,” I was told. A week later I hadn’t heard back from anyone. My queries only got me a response that it was “in progress.” No one would or could tell me more.
I finally knew that my credit was run because I got an alert from my credit monitoring service. And waited to hear from the credit union. Silence.
An attempt to find out what the status of the loan application was got me a response that “a decision has been made” but that I would have to talk to the loan officer working on it. I was transferred to that loan officer’s number and I left a message. Three days later and I have not heard back.
It’s been more than two weeks since I started this process. No one has returned my calls. I haven’t been contacted at any stage in the process. And I still don’t know what the “decision” was… though with a 750+ score with all three bureaus, I am assuming it’s a yes.
I am giving up, despite my best intentions to use the credit union. It’s become obvious you don’t want my business. I think I’m going with a multinational conglomerate bank next.
