The Artist’s Way: Week 2

2013.12 Artists wayLast week, I wrote about Chapter One and began my Week One projects. The truth is that I had a bit of a challenge actually getting started this week. Scheduling the morning pages into my routine took several tries. And, it was more miss than hit most of the week.

The other tool that made me feel more than a little bit silly was writing out the Secret Selves. I actually didn’t want to do it at all, but I’m trying to keep on track as much as I can so I did. It still felt silly.

The First Transformation: Part Two
The Roar of Awakening

Chapter Two addresses the benefits of solitude and time-outs. These are intended to help us develop a sense of play. A sense of play is an important thing when you’re talking about creativity.

TOOL: Time-Out

Once a week for at least one hour, take yourself one some small festive adventure. The idea is to try something new, something different. Time-outs are about awakening our sense of wonder. These “breaks” are not about self-improvement, so don’t try to set something up for work. And remember, you are supposed to do these alone.

TOOL: The Dialogue

Let your pessimist and your optimist be heard. You need to set aside 15 minutes. Take a blank piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left write “My Pessimist” and on the right side write “My Optimist.” On the left list all your negativity and doubts about this creative process. On the right list all your hopes and positive expectations.

TOOLS:
Archaeology Parts One and Two;
The Us and Them List;
Imaginary Lives

These tools you’re going to have to get from the book. It’s a list of fill-in-the-blank sentences to find out what your blocks are about creativity.

TOOL: Affirmation and Blurbs

Create a positive affirmation, using your name and creative goal. Write it down ten times in a row, like when you were writing lines at school to remember something.

TOOL: Customized Affirmations

Choose five customized affirmations (from those offered in the book) and write each of them five times every morning after you do your morning pages.

TOOL: Dumping the Albatross

This tool provides several lists and exercises that are designed to help you develop a new appreciation for your current job. It includes listing ten reasons why your job is important to you and listing positive things about your current position.

TOOL: Walking Your Wisdom

Take a Walk. It doesn’t matter when or how you take the walk, the idea is to get you walking. Walk at least 20 minutes.

Good luck on Week Two!
